About the artist - Marg Upton - Cairns Queensland Australia
I consider myself a visitor to life’s
gallery, an observer from a distance, a cataloguer of images,
circumstances, behaviour and the idiosyncrasies generated
by the diversity of life.
Canada and Papua New Guinea were my homes
at times, but basically, I was a Sydney girl until moving
to tropical Cairns twenty seven years ago. My path through a busy
life in a variety of locations, has been enriched by the
influences of climate, lifestyles, and the people with whom
I observe and share.
My paintings are the genesis of an idea,
which undergoes a journey of change that often evolves into
other forms. Sometimes the final result has no relationship
to the original image. Strong colourful backgrounds can
change to absorb the primary figure to the point of just
a human presence. Somehow, the work reveals the spirit of
the original idea anyway.
Acrylic polymer paint is my (current) medium
of choice as it is a creative tool which is flexible, forgiving
and can be explored and researched in its range of application.
My current work is strongly influenced
by the social and cultural interpretations of a dying breed,
the characters and people who have made Australia. My paintings
are enthusiastically supported, many of which are now hanging
in private collections throughout the world.
